Back in 2006 when i switched to Linux, consequently to Ubuntu, i faced some major issues with driver compatibility. Through the years, Ubuntu started to support most major vendor's hardwares. Now in 9.10, all drivers on my laptop works with the default Ubuntu install. Except for the errant microphone which let me down every time i had to skype someone. Well, not anymore. Here's a quick fix :
Open a terminal and type in alsamixer hit enter.

Unmute all the outputs by hitting “m”
Hit tab to go the capture setting

Highlight the “Mic” setting using the arrow keys.
Hit space to enable the microphone.
Use the arrow keys to highlight “Capture” setting.
Hit space to enable capture.
Press escape to exit.
That's it. Now Grandma can hear you again!

Thanks Arshad, worked great
Thanks Arshad, worked great for me, the only thing is that for me the mic is not the option to enable, but the capture 2 (I enable both of capture devices). Once again thanks.
Happy new year too!!
